1. Introduction: Leader’s role and importance in changing today’s world
Many scholars say that “leadership is of utmost importance. Moreover, indeed there is no substitute for it (Mullins 2013, Drucker, 1989).” Sometimes, by who the leader is, the performance of an organization may be perfectly and unbelievably different even though all things are same. Especially, in changing today’s world, the role and importance of leader who is deciding direction and strategy of an organization is being strengthening more.
2. My leadership vision: what type of leader would like to become?
In Korean society, there is a prevalent anecdote about good leader among the all kind of employee. Quality of leader can be divided into two dimensions, that is, one is stupid and smart, and in addition, the other is idle and diligent. The worst leader is a diligent and stupid leader. On the contrary, the best leader is an idle and smart leader. (Korean leadership expert blog, 2010)

Actually, in this table, each word has much room to interpret. Especially, ‘idle’ include the meaning of empowerment. Even though a smart and diligent leader was best in environment of simple and standing organization in the past, it was changed as a smart but idle leader in today’s complex and changing environment. The reason is that today’s organizational environment demands on more creativity than orders and obeys. Therefore, I have endeavored to be a ‘smart and idle’ leader. My leadership vision is on the basis of democratic leadership (or ‘idle’), but when is needed it can be changed into autocratic leadership to be ‘smart’. When it comes to comprehensive leadership style, it follows to situational leadership theory by Hersey and Blanchard (1997). When I worked at the Government, my ex-boss was the exemplary of a smart and idle leader. He paid attention to only ten core projects and the rest wanted to be reported only result unless there was special situation. Most important thing was that he showed me strong problem solving ability through the leadership style. Therefore, the goal of my leadership is to be a smart and idle in style, another is to ‘be a good problem solver’ as a public officer about hospitality industry in aspect of content. Apart from public sector, there were also many leaders who inspired to me of leadership vision in private sector. For example, the founder of Hyundai in Korea, Mr. Jung, whenever all staffs said that something was difficult job, moreover, impossible mission; he used to ask them actually to have done it before. He disliked people to report following only thoughts or theory without actual try. However, he delegated many things largely to his staffs at same time. This harmony between driving force and trust enabled Hyundai (mobile) to reach today’s achievement.
- Enhancement of Leadership Skill
When I worked, my colleagues used to appoint to me that I tried to do things by myself without synergy effect with them. By the above criteria, it might mean that I had a high possibility of becoming a ‘smart and diligent’ leader (including ‘a stupid and diligent leader’) at most unless I amended it. This was the case that my blind area reduced and converted into public area through feedback according to Johari Window model (Luft, 1970).
Being a good Leader means the person has capability and qualification which can be respected and trusted from subordinators. However, it can’t be achieved at one time and only acquired little by little through experience. Therefore, in MBA, there will be restricted enlargement about those. So, we may have strategic goal to achieve tangible outcome. Firstly, considering my background, I should pour into acquiring business knowledge like finance and organization to understand business world. Secondly, to adapt well to condition of today’s multinational work environment, I should endeavor to advance coordination skill on diverse team members. That can be acquired through multiple group activities. Lastly, apart from business mind, we should enhance understanding for humankind itself. That is because one of the key attributes of successful leaders is their ability to create and communicate a compelling message (Yukl, 2010) and it came from understanding for person. Its achievement is connected to life attitude such as sincere, responsibility and on time rather than the result of special activities in MBA.
4. Conclusion: Beyond leader
Back to the basic, Leadership is the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives (Yukl, 2010). For this, leader should add strenuous enhancement and innovation to born traits. Moreover, leader should sometimes implement multiple roles such as ethical mentor, role model, and supervisor.
